Four

***UPDATE (Received 10/10/08)***

Looks like I won’t be filling in for Toni/Dave this week at Biddy’s after all y’all. Sorry to disappoint anyone who was planning on coming on my four-quizzes-in-four-nights marathon. Looks like it’ll be just three out of four nights! You should still join me, though, though I can’t promise a prize for ya! But what better prize than the pleasure of my company? JWS

***Original Post***

Sorry, I’m reeling a bit because as I write this I just fired off an email to fellow-yet-soon-to-be-retired quizmaster Toni, in which I agreed to fill in for her shift at Biddy’s (which she was already filling in for at for Quizmaster Extraordinaire Dave) next week on Tuesday. What this means, friends who may or may not be reading (my hunch is not) is that next week, I have somehow managed to rope myself into hosting not one, not two, not three, but FOUR Pub Quizzes in a row around the Portland area. That’s right, from Monday through Thursday, October 13 - 16, I will be doing:

MONDAY: The Green Dragon (filling in for Dave)
TUESDAY: Biddy’s (Filling in for Dave)
WEDNESDAY: The Maiden (My NEW night y’all!)
THURSDAY: Belmont Inn (my old standby)

While I have had two nights a week on rare occasions in the past (including my ill-fated dual run at the Red Room and the terrible, simply-titled The Venue), I have never come close to four nights in a row, and am excited to see if I go crazy or ascend to a new level of consciousness in which my brain stops processing events in a linear fashion and allows me to experience life as it truly is, a thing that is happening all at once, all the time, and not moving forward through time as our brains make us think it does.

God I hope that happens. I think it will, if I drink enough beer.

Anyway, I know I’m supposed to be blogging about tonight’s stunning return to victory by Beige Food, but really, who cares about one dinky little quiz when a dude’s about to host FOUR quizzes in a row! Quantity DOES trump quality, people, when there’s enough of it. That’s right, when there’s ENOUGH quantity, quality has nothing on it. NOTHING! Four to one baby, FOUR TO ONE!

Anyone who joins me for all four quizzes next week, gets a special prize. That’s right, I said it. Join me for four nights in a row and I will award you a special prize.

Big thanks to Executive Assistant, Jr. Jennie for stepping in for Executive Assistant Renee tonight and being one hell of a grader. I am truly lucky to be surrounded by wonderful people who enjoy helping me at pub quiz and laugh at my jokes. I love you all.

Reading about your longing for a new level of consciousness inspired me to google you a Grasshopper quote pertaining to sage wisdom and longing. I will channel the Kung Fu master as I write:
“Different fields, different grasshoppers; different seas, different fish”

Shit, wrong google. I hope your head doesn’t implode or explode next week, good luck. I’m tempted to show up just to see what the special prize is!

Hey Justin thanks for covering for me next week!! Maybe this can give you some strength and stamina for the week… Here’s my four quiz a week meditation mantra: “Quiz… Whiz… Quiz… Quiz… Whiz… Quiz… Poop.”
After about an hour of meditation and when you’re in the proper state of mind, you must then go and Grab the pebble from the hand of the homeless guy on the corner Burnside and 3rd… don’t worry you’ll know the him whe you see him… If for some reason he doesn’t have the pebble, you must shout at him very loudly: “I’m the grasshopper Dammit!!! Where’s the freakin pebble?!?”
And then immdiately dance a little Irish jig and then walk away without saying another word…
I do this before each quiz and it really calms and focuses me… Good Luck!
