Pizza Contest Runner-Up Blues

Well after an initial struggle with the sound system (thanks to Pub Quiz Master-master Dave for helping me plug everything in over cell phone), things settled right down here at my substitute gig at the Portsmouth and we had a good ol’ time. Four teams showed up to duke it out for the magnificent $60 pot (We should just give away $60 IN pot when things are that small… that’d probably be a better bang for your buck), with 2323 taking it in commanding fashion. They were so dominant I assumed they were regular winners here at the Portsmouth but apparently this is only the second time they’ve ever won. Good job guys!

Anyway this was my first time out at the Portsmouth and I dug it. Didn’t try the pizza but the video games are cool (nothing like running a pub quiz while dudes are firing virtual shotguns at deer at the Extreme Hunting console 10 feet to the left), and the bartender is super nice and the whole place had a good, friendly vibe. Reminds me of the Shaky’s Pizza we used to hit up after the little league season was over and everyone got trophies. Why was it always pizza, anyway? I guess because pizza is easy to serve to a large squadron of Coke-fueled children in baseball cleats.

I remember one time at this baseball camp I attended for a summer, we actually had a pizza eating contest. The dude who was declared the winner ate like 15 pieces, but… BUT… he didn’t eat any of the crusts! And the dude who was the runner-up DID eat his crusts! I was like, “hey, that douchebag winner guy left like three pieces worth of crusts on his plate! What gives!” But they were so busy celebrating his glory (and also I was a feeble nerd then that nobody listened to… okay I am still a feeble nerd, but at least you HAVE to listen to me when I’m on the PA system! HA HA HAAAAAAAAAA!), they ignored me. Fortunately, the runner-up was a douchebag as well so I didn’t feel too bad for him. But still, fair is fair.

Anyone want to have a pizza eating contest at Portsmouth sometime? I love this place!

Your on for the pizza eating contest Justin!! Of course we’ll have to go and crush some local Little League teams in baseball first… just to get in the mood… You can pitch and cover the infield and I’ll take right field. (That’s the only position anyone would ever let me play in little league so it’s the only one I know)

Of course the field we played little league on in my home town was found out years later to have been a toxic waste dump from the 40’s and 50’s and is now a restricted haz-mat area. And I think of all the dirt I ate while I was daydreaming about trophies and pizza out there in right field… mmmm…

I’ll take you all on. I once ate 10 pieces of pizza. For real! I think I was only 14 at the time and rail thin. Figures! Somehow don’t think my nearing-40 bod will appreciate it, but heck, give it a try…

Thank you so very much for covering for me. Burning Man was sooooo awesome! I’m glad to hear that you had fun with Portsmouth and the great crowd there.

    Have a great week!
