Horse and Hound 8.6.08

The Pub Quizzers at the Horse and Hound do know who lives in a pineapple under the sea, and they also know their Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, and some of them have even heard of Earthworm Jim.

It was a toss up for me between my two trivia loves: Oscar Wilde and cartoons.  I figured I’d go for the crowd pleaser, so we ended up with a quiz on comic characters, Saturday morning specials, and late night remakes of classic cartoons.

I say the game is close every week, but I really mean it this time.  By the end, fewer than sixty points separated first and last place.  Everyone earned their bonus points, but at the end of the Bingo round, Snagglepusses took the 30 point Bingo Bonus.

In the final round, the Snagglepusses, Neon Hyperbola and the Astro Kids and The Mooninites all wagered high over the category “Classic Cartoon Theme Songs,” where they were forced to listen to and identify, of all things, Woody the Woodpecker.  Snagglepusses came in high and won the game, with Neon Hyperbola and the Astro Kids taking second.

You might never want to catch my picks on books, but if anyone is interested, here are some cartoons that are near and dear (I have a soft spot for anime): Avatar, Cowboy Bebop,  Bleach,  The Fairly Oddparents,  and Futurama.

For on-line comic strips: Something Positive, Questionable Content, Grayling (which is awesome if slightly off color), Wapsi Square, Girls with Slingshots, Girl Genius (which is beautiful and NEVER off color), and Scary Go Round.

And if you DID want to catch any books that I’m working on right now, I’m rereading The Idiot and making my first plunge into Swann’s Way and The Devils.  I’m just lucky most of my favorite shows are in reruns now, or I’d never get anything done.

Cheers,

Leandra

My next choice of theme for the Lion…. RIDDLES!!! They Love ‘em!!! Thirsty Lion 8/6/08

Sometimes in the world of Pub Quiz there is a handout so brilliant and insightful that the entire crowd comes up to you after the quiz and says: ‘Man that handout was incredibly creative and remarkably fun!’.

Yea… nothing like that happened last night at the Thirsty Lion… LOL!!  The feelings about the riddle handout were relayed to me on the chorus of ‘Boo’s!’ resounding through the walls of the Lion. It’s all good though… you can’t have a kick ass quiz every week… although that is what we strive for here at Pub Quiz… so I’m going to write the riddle handout off as an enigma and never mention it again!!

But… we had three other GREAT rounds last night that made up for the ridiculous riddles and brought some smiles to the riddle haters… hehe. Carl Perkins was the one who stumped most folks on the Rockstar picture handout (he wrote Blue Suede Shoes for Elvis btw). And everyone enjoyed the journey through rock videos in the Video Round 2. I saw heads bopping to Joan Jett and Big hair 80’s Bon Jovi don’t deny it!!

We let five teams into the final round ‘Mostly Confused’, ‘Hansel… He’s so hot right now!’ (My favorite team name of the night btw) and ‘Gutted Salmon’ all made it but missed out on the cash when they wagered it all and wound up with ‘0′. Which left ‘Scooby’s Red Rocket’ in second and ‘The Good, The Bad and The Wally’ taking the crown for the second night in a row!! Do I smell dynasty??

Cheers,

Dave

Michael Jordan retired too many damn times

Let me say from the outset that yes we did flub up one of the questions in the Bingo round. Michael Jordan retired from basketball 3 times in 1994, 1999 and 2003. Damn you Michael and your ridiculous basketball prowess!

Okay I feel better now that I got that off my chest. Despite that little dispute, all in all we had a great, fun quiz at one of our newest venues at the Maiden. It was a small, but enthusiastic crowd! Add a little COMEDY to the quiz and you can’t help but get some good chuckles.

Team Hardcore shot out to the lead right away with a good score on Bingo round, plus the Bingo bonus. I have to mention that I enjoyed putting on an English accent for one of the questions about the British sitcom Blackadder. I know it helped!!

All the teams did well on the A to Z, too. The handouts were fun and some of those stumper riddles were killer!

In the end it came down to some nifty wagering and a correct answer on the final challenge question, this time an audio clue. I played the theme song of a classic sitcom - One Day at a Time. (Valerie Bertinelli in the house, yo!)

Congrats Manchego Magic! They were the only ones to answer correctly on the final challenge.
Team Maiden snatched 2nd by wagering well (or perhaps by Hardcore wagering less than well).

Thanks for a fun night!

We Got the Beat!

So, like, I totally, like, had an awesomely bitchin’ time with my theme last night at Portsmouth. It was, like, the 80s, fer sure!!

Alright so nobody talked like that last night…but they totally should have.  hehe

It was a small crowd of eager, yet quiet, players.  They tell me the bingo round was way brutal.  And we didn’t have a bingo :( .  We trudged on.  The Name That 80s Tune wasn’t much better, unfortunately.

The teams were all troopers and gave the handouts all they had.  In the end, 2323 pulled into first place with Smokin’ Aces taking 2nd.  It was a tubular quiz, man.

‘Til Tuesday….

Hmm…. I wonder what the Quizmaster’s choice will be…? Biddy Mcgraw’s 8/5/08

Jammin’ night last night at Biddy’s with 72 people! As folks came in, the pot got higher and higher….and so did I. Of course I picked those lovely things in life that there never seems to be enough of for a theme: Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll!! Whoo-Hoo!!

I definitly sobered up a bit as I had to grade the Jeopardy round with 18 teams… Whew!! But everyone was in great spirits and in good manners and in the end five teams got into the final round. I have to give special props to ‘Team Zissou’ who missed the final round by only two points… they had a gripe about the maki-zushi… and I’m sorry… I’m still not taking just sushi all the definitions say roll… the category itself was ‘Rock and Roll’ so you had to have the roll in the answer!!

‘Chicks That Love Animals’ I also have to give props to, for getting into the final round… but unfortunatley missing ‘Kid Rock’.

Who else missed ‘Kid Rock’ you ask? Well ‘Schadenfreude’ and ‘Yogurt Boat’ actually… but ‘Yogurt Boat’ with some sort of bohemian betting strategy ended up with 11 points to ‘Schadenfreude’s’ 10 thus giving them third place and a split of the hefty pot!!

‘The Squirrels’ wagered it all, but didn’t have enough to over take ‘Borg 9′’s lead, which started in an amazing Bingo round.

We have all been assimilated!!

Well played guys!!

Give it up for the boys and men

back-street-boys-i-want-it-that-way

First of all, enjoy the Backstreet Boys while you read the post. [Right click on the link above to open in a new window.] It might be distracting if you’re surprised, like I was, how disgusting well you know the words to the song. In fact I was shocked at how well, I knew so many of the boy band songs (lucky I didn’t break out my Menudo tunes - Roy was my favorite!).

Yes, the theme for the night was Boys to Men. Including the group, but also many other type of boys and men. Shout out to the lovely men of CC Slaughters - especially owners John and Bruce and barkeep Ira - for treating us so well!

It was a head to head race at Pub Quiz tonight with the two Streeps battling it out with a full compliment of Charo’s Angels. Charo’s managed to keep the lead all night, what with all their theme bonus points (great suggestions all around, by the way!) as well as their Bingo win. The Streeps made a valiant effort, and even managed a perfect score on the Child Actors picture handout.

Also, I want to thank both teams for being awesome to each other. I love it when one team cheers for another team!! You rock my Pub Quiz world!

In the end Charo’s Angels were victorious again. Congrats!
The Streeps enjoyed 2nd place. Yay!

Have a great week and we’ll see you next time.

Ummm…what day is it??

So, I’ve been in such a cold-medicine haze all week.  Is it really Friday already??

Tuesday night at Portsmouth Pub is but a mere cloud in my brain at this point. My allergies have not been nice to me this week.  We had a GREAT turn out though.  I had my biggest crowd yet!

The bingo round was a lot of fun.  Squirrels Rule, Dolphins Can Suck It won the Bingo.  I decided to give them the points, even though their name says mean things about my favorite creature!!  Anyhoo, A-Z was an interesting Round 2; especially from the one-man team who felt it necessary to write down nearly-lewd answers to the questions he didn’t know…which was almost all of them.  For the Fancy Dining handout, said player decided to not even try - he just wrote “eat me” over the handout.  Nice.  Classy.  Wow.

Well, it came down to Smokin’ Aces, Nelson 5 and Squirrels Rule in my top 3.  They placed their wagers…some braver than others…The Squirrels were the only ones to get the final question correct and won it with a whopping 727 points!  Way to go!!  Nelson 5 came in second (it was good to see them again!!)

All in all, it was a great night for pub quiz. I made it home and died.  LOL!

Oh and thank you Squirrels for such a generous tip!  I will forgive your team name…for this week.

Chicken Wings and Birthday’s!! Woo-hoo!! Bogey’s 7/31/08

We had a larger than normal crowd ‘Dining Out’ last night at Bogey’s which was awesome! I thought that they all came to see me… but the truth of it was they were there for the wings. I had to try them after Carolyn the  owner told me it was their specialty. And you know what they were GOOD!!! I might go back and get some today!! We also had the one of the best specials in the area going on with the $5 Burger, fries and beer special. So all of us at the quiz were well dined out!

It is always an honor when people decide to spend their special day with us at the quiz. And last night Mary Lou decided to do just that… she was celebrating her 39th birthday (And she’s sticking to that!! :-)) and brought her entourage out with her which was awesome!

We worked through the Bingo and Quizlinks round… with ‘Shuggy’s’ complaining that I was a harsh grader on the quizlinks because they had erased part of a correct answer to try and spell it correctly and forgot to fill it back in…. I’m sorry guys but if it’s erased it’s not the right answer!!  I did feel bad for them though as they had put ‘In and Out Burger’ for the master quizlink when it was Burgerville… SO Close!!!

We also had a new team last night ‘The Christensens’, who even though they were only a team of two, held their own against teams of 5 and 6! Well played guys!! Team ‘Bogey’s’ was in first as we entered the final round and chose the ethnic cuisine which turned out to be a wrong choice as they missed the final question. And in the end everyone missed the final question….

Which meant that poetic justice prevailed and redeemed my harsh judging of the quizlinks round as ‘Shuggy’s’ took the the whole pot as everyone else wagered it all and ended up with 0!! O the fine strategy!! Well done guys!!!

And always remember righty-tighty lefty-loosy…. that’s how you screw things!!

Cheers Everyone!

Pope-a-Palooza

Ahh fine dining at the ol’ Belmont Inn. Nothing goes better with the nachos than the sweet waft of nicotine. Apparently, the Belmont doesn’t really have a special, though I distinctly remember asking server Rascal a few weeks back what her choice of food was and she said the California Burger. So that’s my choice, though I didn’t order it tonight. But I’ll give myself two points for being SO on top of it.

Two points would not have helped me tonight however, as we had a high-scoring match dominated by such Pub Quiz all-stars as Tx, Get Yer Ass to Mars and Encrusted Medallions of Beige Food. Well played by all, though it was Beige Food that took home the big money prize, for the second week in a row.

Pope-A-Palooza. Had to mention it. The question was, what youth-oriented event in Sydney did the Pope currently attend. The answer: World Youth Fair or something boring like that. Whatever team put Pope-a-Palooza had it right. I just imagined this sea of popes rockin’ out to Jane’s Addiction, doing Hail Marys to all the swearwords. I’m going to dream about that all night long… Oh yes, I’ll dream…

I had fun tonight. Everyone was so friendly and kind and quiet. Maybe I’m just getting too used to the 90-plus crowds, but I felt like I was in a library with ashtrays and Tricerahops on tap. Somebody throw a banana at me or something! No, don’t do that. It’s Fine Dining week. Throw some Kobe beef (bloody) and grilled Chinook salmon (not bloody). Surf ‘n’ Turf!

How about those salmon anyway? An unprecedented run of Sockeye swimmin’ on up our own Columbia River. It gives me hope that maybe the world isn’t as fucked as my booze-addled brain wants to believe. A good family friend told me recently that salmon are one of those species that represent the earth’s health, like when they go it means things are going downhill. Go salmon go!

Because they’re just so darn delicious.

Rollover in effect

Though we had a small-ish crowd at The Maiden we had a nice little pot of cash due to the rollover cash from The Maiden’s early victory a couple of weeks ago.

We cozied up with some panini sandwiches (the house recommendation) and all was good with bonus points and all. The teams all did quite well. The Jeopardy round was a bit tough for some folks, though team Stewie tried their best, what with all the double jeopardies they got (4 of 5).

In the end The Craigs were victorious with the correct final challenge answer (the Indian tandoor over) and the correct wager which gave them the lead by a hair. The Maiden came in 2nd so yay another rollover pot for next week.

Come on over and check us out at the lovely Maiden!
